This is a report I originally drafted for Twitter (which is why it’s short format) about Wellington Phoenix and New Zealand Center Back, Finn Surman. Currently, Surman is Linked with MLS side, Portland Timbers. Enjoy!
The Portland Timbers are currently linked with a transfer for Wellington Phoenix CB, Finn Surman. Let’s take a look into Surman the player, and if he will make a good fit in Portland.
Player Profile:
Name: Finn Surman
Birthday: September 23, 2003
Height: 1.90 Meters (6 feet, 3 inches)
Nationality: New Zealand, Wales
Position: Center Back
Foot: Right
Club: Wellington Phoenix
First Team Appearances: 48
Technical: A large, physical defender, Surman is a presence on the Wellington back line. Not afraid to use his body to make tackles or force clearances, Surman is quite effective in spurring transition moments for the Phoenix.
Physical: Surman definitely uses his size to his advantage when he is playing. Because of his large size, he will force his body in between the ball and the attacker, creating a wedge. He will then quickly turn directions and play the ball to a teammate higher up the line.
Surman is also quite the weapon when it comes to defending set pieces. Because of his size, he will play in the target zone, and will force potential receivers out of place, allowing for transition moments to occur.
Tactical Understanding: Surman’s ability to win the ball from attackers is something to note. His awareness in relation to the ball, and where his teammates are allows for him to create opportunities for transition from defense to offense quickly.
Will It Work?
In my opinion, Yes. Signing Surman would definitely be a developmental piece for the Timbers Backline. Surman would be given the opportunity to work and learn from a really seasoned Timbers Backline in Kamal Miller, Dario Zuparic and Zac McGraw.
Regarding playing time, I see Surman spending a lot of time with T2, with occasional first team callups throughout the season when needed. I do see Surman transitioning into a first team player at some point in the future, potentially if some of PTFC’s current backline leave.
I think the fact that he has made 48 appearances for Wellington Phoenix at the age of 20, combined with his naming to the New Zealand Olympic mens roster is a good sign for Timbers fans.
Like any transition, I think it will take time for Surman to find his place within the Timbers organization. I wouldn’t be surprised though to see him as a regular feature in the Timbers backline within the next few years.
If these transfer rumors prove to be correct, I expect to see a player who is coming to Portland prepared to work, and ready to prove himself to the fanbase. I look forward to seeing him blossom into a stalwart defender within the next few years, wherever that may be.
